The Judges’ Association of Serbia welcomes the fact that the High Judicial Council has recognized the importance of the issue of judges’ freedom of expression and has accepted the initiative to open an institutional dialogue on the proposed amendments and supplements to the Code of Judicial Ethics.
At the invitation of the President of the High Judicial Council, Judge Bojana Čogurić, a meeting was held to discuss the proposed amendments to the Code of Judicial Ethics concerning judges’ freedom of speech and freedom of expression. The Judges’ Association of Serbia was represented at the meeting by its President, Nebojša Đuričić, Vice-President Ivana Milovanović, and Vice-President Dejan Petković.
During the meeting, the Judges’ Association of Serbia presented the reasons for adopting the proposed amendments, which are based on contemporary European standards, particularly Opinion No. 25 (2022) of the Consultative Council of European Judges (CCJE) on the freedom of expression of judges. We are pleased that the High Judicial Council has recognized the importance of this issue and accepted the initiative to consider the proposal within its ongoing efforts to improve the ethical framework governing the judicial profession.
The Judges’ Association of Serbia believes that an open and constructive dialogue between judges and judicial institutions is essential for strengthening the rule of law and judicial independence. The Association will continue its activities aimed at advocating for judges’ freedom of speech and improving the Code of Judicial Ethics, with the goal of further aligning it with European standards and the recommendations of relevant international bodies.
